CARL THORNTON – I REMEMBER (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)

“Nothing beats a failure but a try” is a quote that Carl Thornton lives by every day.  A singer, songwriter and actor who draws inspiration from Pharrell Williams, John Legend, and Usher, along with legends Stevie Wonder and Peabo Bryson, Thornton has built up a sparkling track record full of gems. Whether he’s bringing the melodic power-pop of tracks like “I Remember” or filling the dancefloor with house bangers like “Keep Dancing”, Thornton’s mixture of smooth, luscious vocals and hard hitting beats makes it near impossible to stay still while listening to.

Check out the video for “I Remember”, directed by Nectarios Leonidas, here:

Currently living in New York, Thornton has been performing professionally for ten years. His talents have taken him across Europe and in 2012 he was contracted to tour and sing in China, performing in Shanghai, Gangzhou, Fuzhou, and Hong Kong at the Starlight Dance Clubs.

Recent collaborations with DJ/Producer team Carpo & Comes have born two new explosive singles. “C’Mon Me” was released on acclaimed House Label “Jango”, and “Move Your Body” on House Label “Casa Rosa”, this summer past. Another recent collaboration with Jerry Ropero vs DJ Frisco & Marcos Peon, “Hollywood”, was released on last July.

And you can expect many more great things from Thornton, with a brand-new hot dance track coming out this June, this summer.

ALEX – NEW ALBUM ‘AKUMA’

ALEX is an artist who is ultimately doing his own thing. A highly particular and versatile artist forging his way through the Synthwave scene, dedicated to the sounds and styles of the 80s, ALEX has demonstrated enormous growth and ambition over the handful of releases he has gifted us with so far. From the dark, dangerous start with the ‘Blood Club’ EP to the more recent Drive inspired EP, ‘Youth’, and weighty instrumental darkwave album ‘Extinct’, it’s clear ALEX is out to shake off preconceptions about genre.

Listen to ALEX here

Youth EP | Extinct | Blood Club EP

Originating from Edinburgh Scotland, ALEX is a Scottish born electronic music producer, composer and DJ. After spreading his sound to every channel and label possible, ALEX broke through in the most significant way possible. If you get the attention of NewRetroWave in the Synthwave scene, you’re doing something right, and ALEX’s unique approach to composition and production led to his debut release with NRW, the ‘Blood Club’ EP.

Contact: alexofficialaudio@outlook.com

And things haven’t slowed for the young producer, with two more EP’s and an album since his debut, each showing another side to the artist. After the release of his Drive inspired EP ‘Youth’, fans of the powerful vocal tracks ‘Rebel of the Night’ and ‘Youth’ can get excited for the pair of major budget music videos ALEX has in store, with filming having taken place in Russia and New York City.

ALEX grew up listening to the likes of Daft Punk, Justice, Underworld, Chromatics, Deadmau5, absorbing the sounds of Disco, House, Hip-Hop, and Rock, cherry picking his favourite elements to blend into the new retro haze of his own material. He also cites film composers, such as Disasterpiece, John Carpenter, Vangelis, Johan Johansson, and John Williams (see his recent, ‘Jurassic Park’ inspired album, ‘Extinct’). ALEX mentions further influences such as ‘College’ and ‘Electric Youth’, that inspired his recent ‘Youth’ EP.

The future seems bright for ALEX, with the release of his new darkwave album, ‘Akuma’, featuring collaborations with Hayley Stewart and Rachel Mcalpine, as well as Synthwave heavyweight Tokyo Rose:

Preorder Akuma, and check out the first track, here.

We can also be expecting a follow up to ‘Youth’, and an exclusive remix of Akuma for news outlet VICE / Thump are in talks as well, according to the artist.

If there’s something we can’t stress enough, it’s that whether you’re a long time retro fan or new to the scene, ALEX is something special, providing a particular combination of the past and the future that is unmistakable. Keep an eye on this one, big things are in store.

BROKEN ROOTS – NEW SINGLE ‘RATHER SLEEP ALONE’

Broken Roots, a fresh project from Matteo Carinci, has been unveiled with the aim to let people know Matt’s interior. A personal venture into the clean and calming vibes of Indie Dance, Broken Roots is off to a slick and soulful start with his first single, ‘Rather Sleep Alone’:

Listen to ‘Rather Sleep Alone’ here.

Matt’s passion for music was born from within the family, first working with his cousin a number of years ago. Fast forward, through experiments with FL Studio, to just a couple of years back, and we see Matt seriously start producing, pairing up melodies and drums, forming a deceptively simple style that would eventually resolve into the sound of Broken Roots.

During his progression in the music industry, Matt formed a collective with likeminded individuals, including the Trap and Future producer, Denis Elezi and House staple, Greg Haway, together pioneering some of the most interesting sounds in electronic music.

Broken Roots is a project a long time coming for Matt, carrying a great deal of weight, perfectly demonstrated with ‘Rather Sleep Alone’, composed and written for a beloved friend of the artist. The track features some gorgeous and restrained instrumentation, with crisp drums and subtle melodic synths mixed in with warm acoustic guitar and truly heartfelt lyrics. The production quality also speaks volumes as to the effort that has been put into this project – Matt has said that he won’t be pushing out tracks all too regularly in order to maintain this high standard:

“I won’t release a track every month because I think the composition of every single is too important. I take care of everything in the smallest detail.”

Clearly, quality over quantity is the aim here, and from the first taste we’ve got, Broken Roots is set to follow through with this. We can, however, be expecting another single in the coming months, with some of the freshest vibes you can dream of.

If you’ve liked what you’ve heard, you can check out Broken Roots below, and keep an eye out for the future. Matt has also put together a public playlist of the tunes he’s currently feeling, ‘Broken Selection’.

LVX – NEW EP ‘INTERSTELLAR’

A wave of retro nostalgia washes over the listener as the first beats ‘Interstellar’, the debut EP from Jerome Lacroix, aka LVX, come in. Out today on Last Rendez-Vous, this releases marks LVX’s entrance into the synthwave scene, but with the tight, refined production, and subversive, original style, ‘Interstellar’ feel more like the work of a retro staple.

Check out ‘Interstellar’ here.

Hailing from Paris, France, Jerome has been involved in music since his middle school days. From guitarist and bassist within the rock and metal scene for ten years, to his current project as LVX over the last two years, Jerome has proved he’s got what it takes to survive in the industry. Now focusing on his passion for 80’s electronic music and sci-fi, in the form of synthwave, LVX is drawing inspiration from films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey from Stanley Kubrik, and sci-fi authors such as Isaac Asimov, to take listeners back into the neon-drenched decade.

LVX quotes a large range of musical influences; as well as electronic pioneers Jean-Michel Jarre, Daft Punk, Justice and the Prodigy, LVX draws inspiration from the current synthwave and darkwave scenes, and listens to classical, indie-pop, metalcore, trip-hop, and French-house.

With ‘Interstellar’, this range of influences comes across in the huge variety of tones and styles that are incorporated over the EP’s six tracks.

Things kick off with ‘Earthlight’, a punchy synthwave track, bringing up memories of Daft Punk’s glory days, and with a ripping synth solo. ‘Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite’ takes a turn down the brooding road of darkwave, keeping the listener on tenterhooks, before ‘First Contact 89’ slows way down, with snappy trip-hop percussion and dreamy synth melodies to mellow the soul.

The release’s first single ‘The Naked Sun’ picks up the energy once again, with a catchy-as-hell hook, leading to ‘On the Run’, bringing in chiptune elements reminiscent of El Tigre, or Scattle, and careering ahead with its pulsing beat. The spirit of electro-pop lives on in the closing ‘Fear and Desire’, which plays like a synthwave bond theme, featuring some classic-sounding vocal work from artist CR81.

Composed with analog synthesizers typical from the 80’s such as Minimoog Model D, Roland JP8, Obreheim SEM, or Yamaha CS-80, ‘Interstellar’ was recorded and mixed by LVX at home in May 2017. The mastering was realized at Studio La Réserve in Paris and the artwork by the French illustrator Xavier Coste.

Out today, ‘Interstellar’ is available on all digital platforms (Spotify, iTunes, Google Play), and on Bandcamp for streaming, download and physical copies – cassette tapes with the new AUS label Midnight Pursuit.

With a six tracks EP with six different synthwave artists from USA, UK and France before the end of the year, LVX is not messing about.

ALEX – NEW VIDEO ‘REBEL OF THE NIGHT’

Hot off the back of his dark-powered collaboration album with Tokyo Rose, ALEX is serving up some visual wonder in the form of a brand-new video for his track ‘Rebel of the Night’. Out today, the video is available for streaming through the legendary label NewRetroWave.

‘Rebel of the Night’ was originally released as part of the ‘Youth’ EP from the up-and-coming artist, through NewRetroWave, and features haunting vocals from Rachel Mcalpine layered up over the crisp and moody instrumentation from ALEX himself. Directed by LA-based Bogdan Yansen, the music video feeds perfectly into the glowing image of city night scapes, dark and violent, punctuated by the dynamic layer of drawn animation over the action.

And, currently undergoing some final shoots, another video is in the works for ALEX’s track ‘Youth’, with director Seth Lopez at the helm, set in New York City.

Mat Collis – a MOBO and Grammy nominated engineer who has worked with the likes of Jay Z, Charli XCX, Mr Hudson, Yelawolf, The Black Eyed Peas and Steven Wilson – helped shape a sound the pair describe as ‘Dream Pop meets Future Rock’.

Guided by diverse influences, the result of their collaboration melds bombastic riffs with delicately shaped soundscapes to produce a rich multi-layered sound. They site their influences as Cocteau Twins, Battles, Weezer, Kate Bush, Fleetwood Mac, Biffy Clyro, Talk Talk and Genesis.

Tiny Giant’s front woman Chloe Alper launched her music career at the age of 13 fronting the cult Riot Grrrl punk band Period Pains. Alper then helped form the critically acclaimed prog rock outfit Pure Reason Revolution. After they disbanded Alper teamed up with Robin Coudert of the French band Phoenix with whom she wrote the title track for the cult horror remake of Elijah Wood’s Maniac.

The First official single to come from Tiny Giant’s as yet unreleased debut album – Joely – won the fledging act a ‘Limelight’ Best Newcomer award nomination from Classic Rock Prog. Their second single – School of Hard Knocks – was coined by Music Week as one of the “most essential tracks of the moment”. Their most recent single – Draw Me A Line is already making waves.

The track captures a heartfelt blend of spacious, laidback calm and upbeat, indie-pop vibes. Gorgeous piano work and soft synth pads fill out the intro and bridge sections, while its pulsating, melodic chorus lifts the mood. DRONA’s vocals add an emotive and bitter edge to the track, speaking of nostalgia and longing. It’s a beautiful and thought-provoking track, while still having a dance-able edge; Broken Roots has got another solid track under his belt, again demonstrating that his commitment to quality over quantity pays off.

You can find more from Broken Roots below, and of course be sure to keep an eye out for the future. Matt has also put together a public playlist of the tunes he’s currently feeling, ‘Broken Selection’.
